Fields began his career with IBM, but after earning his MBA, he was employed by Ford in 1989 and quickly advanced through the ranks. By the age of 36, he was in charge of Ford’s activities in Argentina. He was then sent to Ford’s Mazda Motor Company’s marketing and sales department in Japan.

He was thereafter named President and CEO of Mazda Motor Corporation. It was finished in 2000 when he was 38 years old. He was the world’s youngest CEO of a large Japanese firm. He was then promoted to vice president of Ford of Europe and Premier Automotive Group. In 2005, he returned to the United States to manage Ford’s Americas division. He devised the “Way Forward” plan, and under his leadership, the corporation earned a $8.3 billion profit with a 12 percent profit margin.

He was recruited as the company’s COO in December 2012, and he was also made CEO in 2014. Alan Mulally succeeded him after that. He joined TPG Capital after leaving his role as CEO of Ford and climbed to the rank of senior adviser. Mark Fields then focused on the company’s industrial division.
