The majority of world speed climbing records belong to American rock climber Ammon McNeely, who also made the first ascents of Yosemite’s El Capitan in a single day. BASE jumping, wingsuit flying, skydiving, surfing, skateboarding, trail running, mountain biking, and snowboarding were some of his other hobbies.

Ammon has led numerous ascents of El Capitan, the majority of which were completed in a single day: Plastic Surgery Disaster, Wall of the Early Morning Light, Atlantic Ocean Wall, and, most recently, ascending The Reticent Wall with Dean Potter and Ivo Ninov in 34 hours and 57 minutes, shaving more than five days off the previous time. There is now more information available on Ammon Mcneely’s demise.

Obituary for Ammon Mcneely

One of Yosemite’s most well-known large wall speed climbers, Ammon McNeely, passed away at the age of 52. Those close to McNeely claim that he slid over a cliff close to Moab for reasons unconnected to climbing, despite the fact that the event is not explicitly described in any records.

On El Capitan in the Valley, McNeely climbed perhaps 60 pitches and stayed on the wall for hundreds of days. According to Yosemite photographer Tom Evans, “McNeely was a driving force for wall climbers in Yosemite for many years.” He was respected among climbers in Yosemite and elsewhere and had a distinctive personality.

In the Valley, he will be missed and remembered. I offer my sympathies to the family and friends. El Capitan speed ascents by McNeely are many and impressive. In 2004, Brian McCray and Chris McNamara completed the first one-day ascents of numerous routes, including the Atlantic Ocean Wall and the Wall of Early Morning Light.

By climbing the Reticent Wall in 34 hours and 57 minutes in 2006, McNeely, Dean Potter, and Ivo Ninov beat the previous record by five days. In 2011, he and Skiy Detray also broke the record for the fastest ascent of Scorched Earth.

Latitudes 5.9 A4+, Rodeo Queen 5.10 A4+, and Tale of the Scorpion 5.10A3+ are the three routes that make up the Streaked Wall, and McNeely set a record in Zion for the fastest ascent of all three in a single day. He is well-known for his daring BASE jumps and a string of accidents, one of which cost him his right leg below the knee in 2017.

Accidentally, an American rock climber perished

One of Yosemite’s most well-known large wall speed climbers, Ammon McNeely, passed away at the age of 52. Blood was “squirting everywhere,” so McNeely used a piece of his BASE gear to make a tourniquet on his leg. He called his friends and warned them that he might faint and needed a helicopter rescue.

About 45 minutes later, his fellow EMT Dave, Brent, Andy, and a few Moab residents found him on the ledge, where they fastened lines and drilled a three-bolt anchor before search and rescue personnel arrived. McNeely feels that his quick thinking and decision-making saved his life. By the time the chopper took him to the hospital, he had lost three quarts of blood.
