The jockey studied at Loreto College and Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School in Ballarat while also pursuing her love of horse racing.

She had aspirations of becoming a rider and creating a name for herself in the racing industry from an early age.

Sadly, the sportswoman’s mother, Mary Payne, died in a vehicle accident when Michelle was just six months old, causing sadness to strike her family.

She was raised by her father, Paddy Payne, who, despite this terrible loss, took on the enormous duty of parenting their 10 children alone.

Her path as a jockey was significantly shaped by her tight relationship with her family and the encouragement she got from her father.

Numerous noteworthy accomplishments have been made during Michelle’s jockey career. She had a severe fall in March 2004 at Sandown Racecourse, which left her with a fractured skull and bruises on her brain.

The athlete persisted in the face of obstacles and eventually triumphed in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield Racecourse in October 2009, her first Group One race.

She proceeded to establish a reputation for herself in the racing industry and attracted national notice in 2015 when she rode Prince of Penzance to victory in two events during the Melbourne Cup carnival, including the coveted Melbourne Cup.

Payne made history in 2015 when she won the Melbourne Cup, being the first woman to do so in the race’s 155-year history.

During the marathon, she dressed in suffragette-inspired hues to represent the empowerment of women. Her victory raised awareness of the difficulties encountered by female riders in a mostly male-dominated sport.

Since then, she has fought for gender equality in equine competitions.

Michelle fell during a race in May 2016, suffering serious stomach injuries. She recovered remarkably, though, and started competing again in September 2016.

She has further said that one day she hopes to go from being a rider to a trainer. For her services to horse racing, she has won various accolades.

Payne received the Longines Ladies Award in Washington, D.C., in 2017 and the Don Award at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Awards in 2016.
