At Radio Trinidad, McDonald gained his first part-time job, and later, while studying international relations at the University College of the West Indies, he got a second one.
He was employed as a producer by BBC Radio, which was based in London but continued to broadcast to the Caribbean, in 1969. McDonald had previously worked as a print and broadcast journalist in Trinidad during the 1960s.
Later, in 1973, McDonald became a general reporter for Independent Television News (ITN). He soon ascended the ranks to the position of sports journalist with an emphasis on global politics.
Trevor briefly worked for Channel 4 News, which was produced by ITN, in the latter part of 1980. He later went back to ITV in 1989 to broadcast the early evening news. McDonald has produced documentaries from 2009 to 2018.
