Becca Meyers, a three-time gold medalist swimmer in the Paralympics, withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics after discovering she could not transport her personal care assistant.
The native of Baltimore acknowledged that departing was a “heartbreaking decision,” but it was necessary to advocate “for future generations of paralympic athletes.”
Meyers released a statement on Tuesday stating, “I’m upset, disappointed, and most of all heartbroken not to be representing my country.” Meyers stated, “As a deaf-blind athlete, the USOPC denied me a reasonable and necessary accommodation to compete in Tokyo.
“Since 2017, the USOPC has permitted me to have a trusted PCA (my mother) at all international events, but this time is different. Understandably, Covid has imposed additional safety precautions and restrictions on non-essential employees, but I need a reliable PCA to compete.”
Becca began her swimming career with Loyola Blakefield Aquatics, where she swam for eleven years before joining North Baltimore Aquatic Club in 2012, where Michael Phelps trained.
She then moved to the Nation’s Capital Swim Club in Bethesda, Maryland, where she trained under Bruce Gemmell, Katie Ledecky’s coach. In both the S13 and S12 categories, she holds numerous world records.
The United States announced in June 2021 that 34 paralympic swimmers would compete at the rescheduled 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.

Meyers has an outstanding international track record, having won gold in the 400m freestyle, silver in the 200m individual medley, and bronze in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. 400m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, and 100m breaststroke.
