Aled Jones is the father of two children: Emilia, an actress and singer, and Lucas, a boy. Emilia starred as Ruby Rossi in the 2021 Sundance smash CODA, which was distributed on Apple TV+ and received critical acclaim. Jones, a devout Christian, has stated that he would be unable to host the BBC devotional show Songs of Praise if he were not a Christian. Jones was born as the single child of teacher Nest Rowlands and shipbuilder Derek John Jones at St. David’s Hospital in Bangor, Caernarfonshire. He attended Ysgol David Hughes and was nurtured in Anglesey’s small Welsh-speaking community of Llandegfan (a high school).
Jones joined the Bangor Cathedral choir at the age of nine and progressed to the position of lead soloist within two years, despite never serving as Head Chorister. Hefina Orwig Evans, a church member, sent a letter to the record label Sain praising Jones’ superb treble voice, and it was formally signed. At the Urdd Eisteddfod in 1982, Jones won the Cerdd Dant solo competitions for children under the age of 12.
Jones rose to notoriety with his rendition of “Walking in the Air,” a song from the Channel 4 animated film The Snowman, based on Raymond Briggs’ novel of the same name. on 1985, the song peaked at number five on the UK charts. Although Jones is widely credited with singing the song featured in the 1982 film, Peter Auty, a choirboy from St. Paul’s Cathedral, actually performed it.
