In October 2015, Phillips stirred some controversy on social media when she made fun of Conservative MP Philip Davies for trying to initiate a conversation on International Men’s Day.
In response, Davies said that he would have faced serious consequences if a male member of parliament had replied in the same manner to the need for discussion on International Women’s Day. Jessica said in January 2016 that weekly occurrences on Birmingham’s Broad Street mimicked the widespread sexual assaults that took place in Cologne.
The lawmaker announced the names of every woman who was slain in 2021 in situations where a male was ultimately found guilty in March of the same year. It was also said that Phillips’ feminist stance excluded those who identify as transgender.
The MP is often the focus of harassment on social media from anonymous people. Because she didn’t agree with International Men’s Day in 2015, she started receiving rape threats on social media.
In only 36 hours in May 2016, the Shadow Minister received tens of thousands of insulting or threatening tweets, some of which included allusions to rape. She claimed that Twitter was “colluding” with her harassers when she filed a complaint on the social media site.
