When Mr. Vega first appeared on television 50 years ago, it was during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, not long after he had moved from Puerto Rico. Neither the Soviet Union nor the United States had sent a man into space. The station that employed him, WEVD-AM, is no more.

Since then, Mr. Vega has broadcast exclusively from New York, with sporadic ventures into television and a side gig as the go-to master of ceremonies for concerts and other events.

We are thankful for the time we had with him and the legacy he leaves in the radio industry, even if words cannot describe how much we will miss him. We send our sympathies to his family and friends. Peace be with you, “The King of Radio En” is Polito Vega.

Mr. Vega worked for a nationwide network of Miami-based stations that is now known as the Spanish Broadcasting System for many years.

He served as the programming executive vice president. In addition to hosting his two-weekend programs, he oversaw the network’s disc jockeys, helped with playlist creation, and gave unsolicited career advice to artists who approached him.

When the Puerto Rican host passed away, he was eighty-four years old. According to certain accounts, Polito Vega’s wife and his married life have not been revealed to the internet.

Married at age 22, he traveled to New York in 1957. He moved in with one of his uncles near the intersection of Broadway and 262nd Street, began working at the harbor, and aspired to pursue his ambition of being a showman.

He had no intention of becoming a broadcaster at the moment. However, he likes to act like the announcer when he plays pretend with his pals.

Radio DJ Polito Vega was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on August 3, 1937, and relocated to New York City in 1959.

He traveled to San Juan as a youngster to participate in an amateur singing competition, which he won, but when he revealed his identity, the master of ceremonies made fun of him.

Born Hipólito Vega Torres, Mr. Vega was reared on the south coast of Puerto Rico in the charming, historic city of Ponce. His father was a bus driver, and as a boy, he supplemented his income by selling newspapers on the beach.

He presented the one-and-a-half-hour program Fiesta Time on WEVD and afterward on WBNX. In 1973, he aired his own program called 100% Salsa every weekday morning. Bolero is carried on most other Latin music radio stations.

The performers Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Machito, Johnny Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Ismael Miranda, Cheo Feliciano, and El Campeón, a duet between Johnny Pacheco and Monguito, are also included on the show, along with merengue, guaguancó, Cuban sound, cha-cha-cha, mambo, and guaracha.

He was the presenter of the Telemundo program Club de la Juventud from 1967 until 1970. He has been the presenter of Salsa con Polito on La Mega 97.9, an FM radio station in New York City, since 1989. The Fania All Stars held a performance in 2004 to commemorate their 45 years of service.
