His initial role was that of an advertising designer and draftsman for the nearby cable company Henleys. He contributed to the success of The Henley Telegraph, the organization’s internal publication, which he commenced contributing short stories to in 1919.
He contributed several short stories, including the frequently suspenseful “Gas,” “The Woman’s Part,” “What’s Who,” and “Fedora,” to the publication.
Furthermore, he developed a steady progression into positions of art direction, screenwriting, and assistant direction, which included “Woman to Woman,” “The White Shadow,” “The Blackguard,” and “The Prude’s Fall.”
“The Lodger,” a suspense thriller set in London and revolving around serial murders, was directed by him in 1926. It was also his first film to achieve commercial success. The producer initially delayed the project, but upon its eventual release in 1927, it garnered tremendous acclaim and financial success.
