Despite her enormous musical success, the 61-year-old country music queen acknowledged that her adopted boys, Levi, 13, and Wyatt, 16, only saw her as their mother.
She told PageSix, before being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, “They think I’m mom.” It’s like yuck if I walk up like this [all suited up] someplace. After seeing my job, they realized that while the years I spent traveling were enjoyable, it was really hard, and they had a lifetime of work ahead of them.
The “If It Makes You Happy” hitmaker has already said that she would never pressure her children to pursue careers in entertainment and that, despite her oldest child having an “ear” for music, she is “happy” for her youngest to pursue his aspirations of becoming a marine scientist.
She said to People earlier this year, “I’m one of those annoying moms who say, ‘You have to take piano,’ but I don’t know whether one of them really wants to do that, but they’re both musical. Don’t dispute with me on it.
“However, my 15-year-old can play pretty well and has a terrific ear. I believe he will always tweak, but because he wants to become a marine biologist—I have no idea what they do—I’m not sure how I can compete with that. So I’m glad he’s heading out to protect the reefs. That’s his desired outcome.
“All they say is, ‘Mum, what’s this old music?'” However, they hum and sing it as they go about. My fifteen-year-old said, “I got sunshine all the time.” I believe that what I’m doing is correct. My fifteen-year-old son, who is also a fantastic bass player, is studying James Jamerson the same way I did, having grown up around it.
