He then worked for several publications, including “The New York Times” and “Vogue,” before settling on the latter. There he served as the fashion news director for “Vogue” from 1983 to 1987 and as the first African-American male creative director from 1988 to 1995.

In 1984, he and Richard Bernstein authored the book “MegaStar.” However, in 1995, he relocated to Paris to join “W” and ceased his position as creative director at Vogue. During this time, he continued to serve as a contributing editor at “Vogue.”

He rejoined “Vogue” in 1998 as editor-at-large and remained so until his retirement in 2013 to pursue an additional editorial endeavor. Andre published an autobiography titled “A.L.T.: A Memoir” in 2003, followed by “A.L.T. 365+” two years later.
