JK Dobbins was born on December 17, 1998, to Lawrence Dobbins and Mya Grounds. Even though they were high school sweethearts, they never married.
Furthermore, Dobbins was born when his mother was about 18 years old. JK Dobbins is a running back with the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL). He attended Ohio State before being selected by the Ravens in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Meet JK Dobbins’s Mother Mya Grounds
Dobbins inherited his mother’s tenacity. Mya Grounds, a high school athlete who excelled in volleyball and basketball, was unable to pursue collegiate athletics due to parental responsibilities. Despite this, she finished her education by enrolling in classes at the University of Houston and earning a finance degree.
She now juggles her job as an IRS accountant with the responsibilities of raising her younger son, Kance, and other children. Lawrence Dobbins was the standout running back at J.K.’s high school, La Grange. He was also a great sprinter on the track and field team.
Lawrence’s speed led him to Lincoln University, a Division III HBCU in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the 4100-meter relay team that came just short of winning the national championship in 1999. He returned to Texas, however, and enrolled at Blinn College, a small college with a football program.
Despite initially joining the football team, he was unable to participate and eventually resigned. Lawrence ran into problems after football did not work out for him. On February 22, 2014, J.K. was 15 years old when he died from a stroke at Bartlett State Prison. Lawrence was convicted of property theft in 2012 and sentenced to two years in prison.
Taking on His Father’s Legacy
Despite his troubles, J.K. maintained a close relationship with his father, who had expressed his desire that his son not follow in his footsteps. J.K. and his father had a close bond until his father died unexpectedly. During this time, J.K. frequently stayed with his father and grandparents, C.L. and Rita, while his mother, Mya, worked or went to school. Coping with his father’s death was difficult, but Dobbins was determined not to let his ambitions be derailed by his grief.
Football became a source of enjoyment for him as well as a means of coping with his loss. He improved as a player and enjoyed football nights as much as his father did during his playing days. Dobbins’ father’s passing at a young age pushed him to mature faster than many of his classmates, and he carries a piece of his father’s legacy with him every time he carries the football.
