Ron Rivera, the legendary football coach, has always sought inspiration and encouragement from his parents, Dolores and Eugenio Rivera. When Ron was a young athlete, his mother, Dolores, took great care to shield him from any bad news that would distract him from his game.
Ron needed her encouragement and support to be focused and dedicated. Ron was born in 1962 in California to a mixed family. His father, Eugene, is of Puerto Rican origin, while his mother, Dolores, is of Mexican and Filipino descent. Eugenio Rivera, Ron’s father, served in the United States Army for 32 years, leading the family to migrate several times.
As a result, Ron attended schools in places including Germany, Panama, and Washington, D.C. They eventually settled in Marina, California. Dolores, Ron’s mother, died in 2022 under mysterious circumstances. Ron remembered his mother as an active participant in a number of activities, such as bake sales and Christmas bazaars, as well as serving as a team mom for her son’s sports teams.
Ron’s sibling died as a result of cancer
Rivera suffered the loss of a close family member to cancer. When his elder brother, Mickey, died of pancreatic cancer, he was devastated. Mickey was diagnosed in 2013 and died in Reno, Nevada, in 2015, at the age of 56. Ron stressed Mickey’s selflessness and humility in remembering him.
Despite his situation, Mickey did not solicit sympathy. Instead, he hoped that people would not feel sorry for him because he had enjoyed a good life. Ron was moved to give to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network after learning about Mickey’s struggle with pancreatic cancer. Ron fought cancer in 2020, enduring chemotherapy during the football season.
