Michael was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 28, 1986, as Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. He is one of 12 children born to Michael Jerome Williams and Denise Oher. He played offensive lineman in the National Football League as an American football player in the past.

His father was killed when he was a high school student, and his mother was a heroin addict.
Michael completed his education at Brigham Young University after attending Briarcrest Christian School. He continued his academic study at the University of Mississippi after that.
Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy provided Oher with a place to live in 2004 while he was living in multiple foster care homes since the age of 7. In due course, they adopted him.
Growing up, the Tuohy family was his rock. They attended to his needs and even employed a tutor to assist him in his football studies. Michael still maintains a close relationship with the family.
