Auburn reportedly announced Derrick’s hiring on January 17, 2024, with Kent Austin, the quarterback coach. The coach began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, from 2003 to 2006.

He started as a defensive graduate assistant, then worked with tight ends before becoming a running back coach. Furthermore, Derrick had an impressive 16-year coaching career at the University of Mississippi football program.

During his tenure, he served numerous jobs, including running back coach (2008-19), wide receivers coach (2020-23), and assistant head coach (2022-23). His athleticism and game-changing abilities earned him the nickname “The Baby Bull.” Furthermore, the former star led the Golden Eagles in rushing for two consecutive seasons and threw for more than 1000 yards. Derrick finished his college career with 768 carries for 3,584 yards and 20 touchdowns. Aside from that, he holds a bachelor’s degree in sports and fitness management. Furthermore, despite his desire to play professionally, Derrick underwent a kidney transplant and chose to pursue a coaching career.

On January 17, 2024, Auburn announced the appointment of Derrick Nix as offensive coordinator and running back coach. Mississippi announced Nix’s retirement on X, formerly Twitter, and expressed gratitude for his 16 years of service.

Mississippi’s coach, Lane Kiffin, stated, “Acknowledging the opportunity to become a first-time play-caller with full-time playcalling duties at Auburn University.” Furthermore, he stated,
