He had become a well-liked character in the hurling community thanks to his extraordinary abilities and dedication to the sport, particularly in hurling. Following his lucrative career as a thrower, Carey demonstrated his entrepreneurial flair by starting several businesses, notably D.J. Carey Enterprises. On September 29, 2023, Carey was confronted with serious legal charges of forgery and deceit. According to allegations, he made up a cancer diagnosis to coerce others into giving money.
