He had a sibling named David. Stage actors comprised Cushing’s paternal grandfather, paternal aunt, and step-uncle. The family relocated from Dulwich to Purley following the conclusion of World War I. Peter contracted pneumonia twice and “double pneumonia” once during his childhood.

After viewing a rendition of “Peter Pan,” he developed an interest in acting. As a child, he relished the opportunity to dress up and engage in imaginative play.

During his adolescence, Cushing generated revenue by conducting puppet shows for his family. He attended Shoreham Grammar Institution, a boarding institution, but he withdrew after one semester due to homesickness.

Peter subsequently participated in rugby and cricket at the Purley County Grammar School, and his brother frequently assisted him with his assignments. Peter was cast as the protagonist in several plays, and D.J. Davies, the producer of the school’s plays, encouraged him to participate in the productions.

Cushing’s father secured him employment as a surveyor’s assistant in the drawing department of the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council’s surveyor’s office, despite his desire to pursue an acting career after high school. Despite his dissatisfaction with the position, he continued to work there for three years.

During this period, Davies continued to permit Peter to participate in school performances, and Cushing also appeared in amateur productions. He subsequently applied for a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Following his rejection at the audition, he composed over 20 letters to the school. Bill Fraser, the theatre manager, consented to meet with Peter in 1935 to request that he cease sending letters in person.

During the meeting, Fraser granted Peter a walk-on role in the J.B. Priestley play “Cornelius.” After making his professional stage debut in the production, Cushing was eventually awarded a scholarship, even though he had no lines.
