Baumann threw 78.70 meters at the 1995 Pan American Games in Argentina on March 21, 1995. He received a silver medal after finishing second to Cuban thrower Emeterio González, who threw 79.28 meters. Baumann’s result of 78.70m was the South American record at the time, breaking Colombian thrower Luis Lucumi’s throw of 77.80m, which had been held since 1989. He was the only Paraguayan to win an athletics medal at the competition.

Baumann was one of eight Texas State University track and field athletes who were on the verge of competing in the 1996 Olympics. On October 17, 1999, Baumann threw 84.70 meters during a meet in San Marcos, Texas.  The result of 84.70 meters increased his continental record for the fourth time, surpassing temporary record holder and compatriot Nery Kennedy’s throw of 81.28m meters in 1998. Baumann was ranked sixth in the world by the IAAF and qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
