Dick Curless was born in Maine on March 17, 1932. American country singer is known as the Baron of Country Music and who is remembered for wearing a patch over one of his eyes. He released singles like “Hard, Hard Traveling Man” in 1970. In Stephen King’s 1971 novel, Salem’s Lot, King references Curless’s song, “Bury the Bottle With Me.” He hosted a Massachusetts radio show in 1948 and was also part of a local band called Trail Blazers. Later he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.

In 1948, Curless began his music career in Ware, Massachusetts, where he presented a radio show and traveled with the Trail Blazers, a local band. From 1952 to 1954, he served in the Korean War as a truck driver and later as a radio broadcaster under the stage name “Rice Paddy Ranger.” In 1954, he moved to Maine and continued to sing on radio shows, but because of a severe illness, he spent much of the next year, 1955, at home.
Curless reappeared in the public eye in 1957, when he appeared on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts on CBS. In the late 1950s, he spent a lot of time performing in clubs in California and Las Vegas.
“A Tombstone Every Mile,” one of Curless’ biggest singles, reached in the top 5 on the Billboard country charts in 1965, propelling him to national prominence. He traveled the country with the Buck Owens All American Show from 1966 to 1968. In the late 1960s, he reached the zenith of his career, with eleven top-40 songs, including “Six Times a Day (the Trains Came Down).” Over the course of his career, he had 22 Billboard top-40 hits. He frequently played at the Cristy Lane Theater in Branson, Missouri, in the latter portion of his life.
Curless died in 1995, at the age of 63, from stomach cancer.
