Scott’s first book of poetry, Flesh and Blood, was released in 1984, and she went on to write the play Say Thank You to the Lady, for which she won the renowned Bruce Mason Playwriting Award in 1986. Scott’s debut novel, Glory Days, was published in 1988 when she was 40 years old. It was nominated for a New Zealand Book Award and published in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Scott went on to write five more novels, a collection of short stories, and a book of essays.
In Australia, Scott has been dubbed a “important voice in modern women’s fiction.” In her New York Times Book Review review of Glory Days, Marilyn Stasio called Scott’s writing “an introspective voice that’s rich in poetry and raw with anguish.” Nights With Grace was praised as “one of the finest Antipodean books of recent times” by John Macgregor in The Australian in 1990. In 2004, Faith Singer was named to the Orange Prize’s list of 50 Essential Reads by Contemporary Writers. The New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards, the Banjo Patterson Award, the New Zealand Book Awards, and the Biennial Adelaide Festival Award have all shortlisted her work.
