Career
Townsend began writing in secret from the age of 14, and her signature character originally appeared in a radio drama, but her work quickly spread into other mediums. In the 1980s, she had a lot of success, with her Adrian Mole books selling more copies than any other work of fiction in the UK at the time. The character’s diaries are the focus of this series, which grew to include nine books. The series begins with a teenage boy’s life during the Thatcher years, but it soon moves on to Adrian Mole in his middle years. Another well-received work, The Queen and I (1992), offered an outlet for her republican ideas, while the Royal Family is nonetheless depicted sympathetically. The Queen and I and the first Adrian Mole book were both adapted for the stage and had successful runs in London’s West End.
Townsend was destitute until she was well into her forties, and she drew on her struggles in her art. Her health deteriorated in her latter years, owing in part to diabetes she got in the mid-1980s, and she suffered major vision and movement problems in her final years.
