John Doran was born in England on March 11, 1807. A nineteenth-century English author, he is known for his miscellaneous writings, essays, and contributions to the London Literary Chronicle. He wrote cleverly titled works such as Knights and Their Days and Table Traits with Something on Them. He and Hannah More were both colleagues of author Elizabeth Montagu. He wrote a play called Justice, or the Venetian Jew when he was just seventeen years old. He later graduated from the University of Marburg and subsequently secured a position as editor of the Church and State Gazette.

Doran penned a melodrama called Justice, or the Venetian Jew, at the age of seventeen, which premiered at the Surrey Theatre on April 8, 1824. Doran began writing for the London Literary Chronicle (incorporated into the Athenaeum in 1828) before leaving England, and he became a frequent writer during his time abroad. Sketches and Reminiscences were published in 1828 as a collection of his Parisian sketches and letters. Béranger and Catullus were two of his favorite authors, and he began supplying the Bath Journal with lyrical translations from French, German, Latin, and Italian in 1830. He authored the History of Reading in 1835.
Under the title Filia Dolorosa, Doran published Marie Thérèse Charlotte, Madame Royale’s narrative in 1852. Isabella Frances Romer had written the first 115 pages, but she died, leaving the fragment. In 1852, he also produced a revised edition of Charles Anthon’s translation of Anabasis of Xenophon. In 1853, he prefaced a reissue of Edward Young’s Night Thoughts with a biography of the author, which was updated in 1854 for Young’s complete works.
