One of the first cases Garavaglia worked on as a medical examiner was the Morning Glory Funeral Parlor incident, in which 37 remains were discovered in a funeral home, many of which were in advanced stages of decomposition. After exhuming several caskets buried by the funeral director, Garavaglia discovered that the director had placed multiple people in single caskets and pocketed the money.

Garavaglia examined Tracie McBride’s body as an associate medical examiner in Bexar County, Texas, and then autopsied her at the Bexar County Forensic Science Center in San Antonio, Texas; the case was covered by Dr. G. McBride was murdered by Louis Jones, who was executed by the federal government in 2003.

The remains of a little girl, revealed to be those of missing Caylee Anthony, were discovered near the Anthony residence in Orlando on December 11, 2008. Because the area fell under Garavaglia’s jurisdiction, it was Garavaglia who examined the remains and made the determination.

Garavaglia published How Not to Die in 2008, in which she uses her personal experiences as a medical examiner to teach readers how to better care for their health and avoid an early death. She delivered the keynote presentation during the 2012 Science Olympiad National Tournament opening ceremonies on May 18, 2012, at the University of Central Florida.

Garavaglia announced her retirement from the District 9 medical examiner’s office on May 15, 2015, following more than two decades in the field of forensic pathology. She had earlier claimed that she planned to retire once their youngest son departed for college in 2013, but she ended up going on as District 9’s chief medical examiner for two more years.

She told the local news reporter who interviewed her that she planned to retire and move to her husband’s hometown, 90 minutes north of Seattle, Washington.
