In his 22 years in television, he served as President of The News Broadcasters Association of India and Vice President in Strategic Affairs of The Indian Broadcasting Foundation. In March 2015, he received the civilian award Padma Bhushan from President Pranab Mukherjee. While dabbling in student politics at Delhi University, he was jailed for 11 months during Indira Gandhi’s Emergency declared in 1975. Following his release, his interest in politics became a full-blown passion.
