Before moving to the United States at the age of 23, Cristeta Comerford completed a course in food technology in the Philippines. She eventually obtained naturalization status and began her career as an American chef by working at hotels close to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Before being hired as an associate chef for the White House in 1995, she had previously worked as a cook at two hotels in Washington, D.C.

First Lady Laura Bush appointed Comerford to executive chef of the White House in 2005, making her the first woman and person of Asian origin to occupy this post. Comerford served in the administrations of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden at the White House. She has a daughter with her husband, fellow chef John Comerford.

Cristeta Comerford was born in Manila, Philippines, on October 27, 1962. With 10 siblings—six half-brothers, one half-sister, and three complete sisters—she grew up in Manila’s Sampaloc district. In her family, she was the second-youngest child. Her mother, Erlinda Gomez, was a dressmaker, and her father, Honesto Pasia, was a principal of a school.

Comerford recalled that as a child, her mother was a superb cook who taught her daughters to value fine cooking. Fresh ingredients from Comerford’s grandparents’ farm were frequently available to the family.

Comerford attended the University of the Philippines-Diliman to study food technology. Because her brother, Juanito Pasia, was already employed in the United States, she went before finishing her degree. When Comerford was 23, she and several other family members landed in Chicago and emigrated to the US.

One of Comerford’s first positions was managing the salad bar at a hotel close to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, earning her the moniker “salad girl” from her brother. Before working as a cook in two hotels in Washington, Le Grande Bistro at the Westin Hotel and the Colonnade at the former ANA Hotel, she was employed by another hotel close to O’Hare.

Comerford also spent six months in a chef tournament (also known as a rotating chef) at Le Ciel in Vienna, Austria. She learned how to prepare traditional French cuisine there.

Comerford was appointed in 1995 to serve as an assistant chef in the White House during the tenure of Bill Clinton’s executive chef, Walter Scheib III. Scheib was fired by First Lady Laura Bush after George W. Bush was elected president, and she then started looking for a new chief chef. Comerford was one of 450 candidates that applied for the job.

Comerford and another chef managed continued executive chef duties at the White House throughout the six-month hiring process. As the field of candidates was narrowed down, she stayed in the race and showcased her skills by managing the cuisine at a dinner in July 2005 for the visiting prime minister of India. Comerford was appointed as the new executive chef of the White House by Laura Bush the following month.

Comerford was the first woman, a person of Asian ancestry, and a person of color to hold the position of executive chef in the White House. Additionally, she was the first executive chef to receive a promotion from the White House kitchen.

Comerford remained in his position as executive chef after Barack Obama was elected president. Soon after First Lady, Michelle Obama put in a garden on the White House lawn, Comerford started modifying her meal to make the most of the recently harvested ingredients. Comerford previously told CNN, “We have gorgeous food growing practically in our backyard, screaming our name and saying “Hey, I’m ready to be prepared today.”

President Obama commended Comerford as one of the many Filipino-Americans who contribute to the United States when he attended a state banquet in the Philippines in 2014. Comerford remained in his position as a chief chef after Obama’s two years in office, serving under both Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

As the White House executive chef, Comerford qualified for membership in the Club des Chefs, a network of chefs serving presidents, royalty, and prime ministers. The group hosts annual gatherings where members exchange recipes and culinary information.

What Does the Executive Chef at the White House Do?

Comerford is the White House’s executive chef, in charge of five other chefs and additional kitchen personnel. She creates everything from extravagant state meals to late-night presidential snacks, so her job requires flexibility. The White House kitchen is adapted to follow kashrut standards to ensure that kosher food is correctly prepared for religious festivals like Hanukkah.
