At his school, Adam first took up Australian rules football. He joined North Ballarat’s under-18 team when he was 16 years old.

After two years, the Sydney Swans of the Australian Football League selected Adam. Adam made his debut and earned the Rising Star Award for the season in 1999 at the age of 19.

He struggled with consistency while playing a variety of positions in 2000 and 2001. Adam was on the edge of being fired from the squad in 2002 because his performance was becoming worse every day. Later on, though, his form improved, and he began to play more ruck.

At the conclusion of the 2003 season, Adam won the Bob Skilton Medal and was chosen for Australia for the first time.

All season long in 2009, he was the top player. He beat Mark Ricciuto’s previous record by 274 days and became the player to play in the 300th AFL game the quickest in the league’s history.

Alongside Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley and Adelaide’s Mark, Goodes was also awarded the Brownlow Medal, the league’s highest individual accolade.
