Ryan Kaji, One of the highest-paid YouTubers in the world is the host of the channel Ryan’s world. He earned $22 million and $26 million, respectively, making him the highest-paid YouTuber in 2018 and 2019, according to Forbes. Ryan is only nine years old, mind you.
According to an October 2020 Business Insider report, the brand made over $200 million in retail sales in 2019. Ryan’s YouTube channel has close to 29 million subscribers thanks to its attraction to kids all around the world. When you take into account ancillary channels like Kaji Family (6.84 million) and Combo Panda, his audience is significantly larger than that (1.7 million).

Kien and Shion Guan welcomed Ryan Kaji (real name Guan) into the world in October 2011. In Houston, Texas, Kien was born in April 1984 to Vietnamese immigrants. In the late 2000s, Shion relocated from Japan to Texas to pursue a degree in civil engineering.
After asking his mother why other kids were using social media and he wasn’t, Kaji made his YouTube debut. “He once questioned why I wasn’t on YouTube like all the other youngsters,’ I recall. Kien said to TubeFilter. We just determined that we can do that, so there. It all began when we took him to the store to buy his first toy, which was probably a Lego train set.
A video showing Ryan reviewing 100 toys at once became viral four months after Ryan’s initial videos received few views and reviews. Every month, the channel’s views began to double. The channel attracted more than ten million subscribers in a year. More than 1 billion people have seen the review video that made Ryan famous online.
Given that his parents started the channel during the YouTube “unboxing” frenzy, Kaji’s ascension on the platform made sense. Additionally, Ryan was this happy, vivacious child enjoying typical kid activities without using foul language or engaging in chitchat. He made an impression on both parents and kids. Shion, though, told Business Insider that he didn’t understand why so many people were watching Ryan’s amateur videos:
“We observe that growth not just in the US but also elsewhere. When I initially noticed how many kids throughout the world were watching our amateurish movies, I was very perplexed and shocked.

Ryan has pretty much lived in front of a camera since he was three years old. Despite the significance of YouTube, Ryan’s parents told TubeFilter that they tried to provide him with a regular existence. In his words:
We normally film two to three videos at a time two to three times each week, and we publish a new video every day. Most of the filming is done on the weekends because we try not to interfere with Ryan’s pre-pre-school routine, and we edit while he is in school.
As time passed and Ryan’s popularity grew, his parents made the decision to find a production firm to handle content creation. Even though Ryan is still the star of the show, 30 other people contribute to the content production. Shion explained to Business Insider that the goal of hiring 30 people is to lessen Ryan’s workload:
“We decided that forming a production firm would be ideal for Ryan to improve the channel’s productivity and reduce Ryan’s involvement in the videos. The most important factors are Ryan’s youth and privacy. Additionally, we wanted Ryan’s education to come first above all else.
There are regulations controlling how many hours a child actor must work in conventional film and television productions. Child stars on YouTube, however, are at the will of their parents or legal representatives. However, Ryan is in charge, according to Shion and Kien, and the show will end when he decides that he is no longer having fun. As he stated to TubeFilter:
After Kien served 30 days in prison for violating his parole, Shion and Kien became friends.
When Kien was 18 years old, he was charged with theft at a Houston JC Penney department store in June 2002.
Kien was caught by security while attempting to steal $93 worth of goods. Instead of sending Kien to jail for 60 days, the Harris County Criminal division was lenient and ordered her to pay a fine and put her on probation.
Along with 40 hours of community service, Kien was also required to take part in a program to combat shoplifting. By skipping community duty and failing to report to a community supervisor, Kien broke the terms of her probation. She was detained for her offense and given a 60-day county jail sentence. Kien stayed in the Harris County Jail in Houston for 30 days.
Later, Kien enrolled at Texas Tech University to further his teaching career by studying arts and sciences. In September 2009, through common connections, she met Japanese student Shion Guan, who was studying civil engineering. Shion and Kien were four years apart in age, but it didn’t stop them from dating. Shion and Kien had become essentially inseparable by November 2009.
Kien graduated in 2010, obtained a Texas teaching license in April 2012, and started teaching chemistry to high school students. Shion enrolled at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, to pursue a Master’s degree after receiving his degree from Texas Tech. 2013 saw his return to Texas, where he wed Kien on August 10.
