Bob Dylan met Baez in the middle of the 1960s when the singer was still relatively unknown worldwide. After they first met in 1961, Joan encouraged Bob to share her stage and go on tours with her whenever possible, which helped him establish his career.

In 1965, while on tour, their partnership came to an end, and they never again shared a stage together. Bob hardly ever mentioned Joan after their breakup, not even in his autobiography. There was only one cryptic remark directed at Joan.

However, Bob later expressed regret for leaving her behind when he went on his famed 1965 car trip through Britain. He justified his actions by saying that he didn’t want Joan to become “caught up in the madness my career had become.”

After 44 years since their breakup and no apology from Bob, Joan-Baez received a public apology from him in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square for the way he treated her and ended their 1960s romance.

When Joan-Baez married David Harris, one of the demonstrators against the Vietnam War Drift, in 1968, she experienced love for the first time in her life. Gabriel Harris, their son, was born to them in December of 1969. Gabriel is a musician just like his mother Joan, and the two of them occasionally go on tour together.

David’s arrest prevented Joan and him from remaining partners for a very long period. A few months after David’s release in 1972, the couple divorced. In her biography, Baez lists the following as the cause of her separation:

“I was designed to live alone.”

Following David, Joan was associated with a variety of people, including Steve Jobs, Mickey Hart, and Kris Kristofferson. In an interview, Baez discussed her romantic life and said:

“I was frightened of any closeness. That’s why I was perfectly content with 5,000 people… One-on-one, though, it was either absolutely ephemeral—it would disappear the day after the concert and make me ill—or it was something I thought was true but ended up being heartbreaking.”

A Journey Toward Retirement for Joan Baez

Albert Vinicio Baez and Joan Bridge welcomed Joan Chandos Baez into the world on January 9, 1941, on State Island in New York City, USA. Her mother is English and her father is Mexican, making her a mixed-race person.

At the Newport Folk Festival in 1959, Joan made her debut as a folk performer in front of the general public. The next year, she published her debut album on Vanguard Records, which had songs endorsing pacifism, social justice, and civil rights. The record increased her notoriety and gave her the reputation of being an activist.

Additionally, the songs “Diamonds & Rust,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “There but for Fortune,” “Love is Just a Four-Letter Word,” “Three Horses,” and others contributed to the singer’s remarkable career.

She traveled to several locations while showcasing her singing abilities to effect change in the past.

She regularly arranges visits to various locations since she thinks that traveling can bring about transformation. The iconic performer gave her final concert at Madrid’s Teatro Real, and on April 7, 2017, she was honored with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Joan received the Kennedy Center Honor in May 2021.
