In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie provided an update on her much-discussed female-led Pirates of the Caribbean film. After it was announced in June 2020 that Robbie will star in a new Pirates film written by screenwriter Christina Hodson, the actress said the project had been abandoned and detailed how it had been canceled.

Given the popularity of the Johnny Depp-led Pirates of the Caribbean series, Disney began work on Robbie’s Pirates in 2020. A second reboot, scripted by Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin, was also under production.

Additionally, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has already revealed the existence of two films in development—one starring Margot and the other not.

The actress recently opened up in an interview with Vanity Fair about how the much-discussed movie ended up being abandoned.

“We had a concept and we were developing it for a while, years ago, to have more of a female-led story,” she added.”

It wouldn’t have been entirely female-led, but just a different kind of story. But I guess they don’t want to do it,” she continued, referring to the Disney project.

Return of Johnny Depp to the Series

Several rumors surfaced this year after Johnny Depp prevailed in his Virginia defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard that the actor may reprise his enduring Captain Jack Sparrow role in the successful Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Additionally, reports claimed that Depp was being paid USD 301 million by the studios to play his beloved character again on screen, albeit the claims were refuted by the actor’s representatives.

If Disney came to him with USD 300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on earth would persuade you to go back and work with Disney on a “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, correct?

Heard was questioned by Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn during his court appearance in the June trial. Depp then responded, “That is true,” to the query.

After winning his case, the actor put out a music record and started directing a film that Al Pacino is producing.
