David Jolicoeur, a founding member of the groundbreaking hip-hop group De La Soul, has died at the age of 54, according to US media.
The rapper, whose stage name was Trugoy the Dove, passed away without an official cause of death.
In recent years, the American musician had already discussed his congestive heart disease in public.
Alongside Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer) and Maseo, Jolicoeur co-founded the famed trio (Vincent Lamont Mason Jr).
The trio altered the face of hip-hop in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and they were honored during a tribute to the genre at last week’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
B Real, a member of the hip-hop group Cypress Hill, praised Jolicoeur on Twitter as a “legend of hip-hop music and culture.”
He remarked,
“His music will allow him to live on in our hearts and minds.” “In addition to being a brilliant musician, he was also a fantastic human being. He was significant to us.”
The band’s iconic albums were made available for streaming online last month.
Complex licensing concerns surrounding De La Soul’s use of hundreds of samples had previously slowed the move.
On March 3, De La Soul’s first six albums will be made available on digital streaming services for the first time.
Their 1989 first album, 3 Feet High and Rising, topped Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop album chart and frequently features on lists of the greatest albums of all time. It featured songs including The Magic Number and Me, Myself, and I.
