The Republican response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address was given by Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the youngest governor in the United States.
Mrs. Sanders, age forty, took her oath of office as the first female and 47th governor of the southern state of Arkansas four weeks ago.
However, she is best recognized for serving as former President Donald Trump’s press secretary from 2017 to 2019.
In her 10-minute formal answer, she criticized Mr. Biden on multiple occasions.
She emphasized his age, noting that he is the oldest president in US history at 80 years old, and accused his administration of failing the American people since assuming power two years ago.
“Tonight, I heard from Vice President Biden,” she said in the prerecorded video address that was shown shortly after Mr. Biden spoke. “From out-of-control inflation and violent crime to the perilous border crisis and Chinese threat, Biden and the Democrats have failed you,” the statement reads.
She also criticized “woke delusions” and “a culture war on the left.”
Mrs. Sanders, speaking from Little Rock, the state capital of Arkansas, stated,
“Americans deserve common sense from their leaders, but the Biden administration is doubling down on insanity in Washington.”
“It’s time for a change,” she stated at the conclusion of her address. “A new generation of Republican leaders is rising to the fore… Not as guardians of the existing quo, but as agents of change for the American people.”
In a speech lasting more than an hour, Vice President Biden lauded recent employment gains and declining inflation. In the address, which is largely regarded as a plan for a possible re-election bid in 2024, he urged a divided Congress to come together.
Mrs. Sanders is the youngest child of the two-time presidential candidate and former governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee.
During her time in the White House, Mrs. Sanders and journalists frequently fought, and she was the target of jokes about her appearance.
Since 1790, with the exception of presidential inauguration years, the State of the Union has been delivered annually, although the history of the opposition’s response is much shorter.
In 1966, after Lyndon Johnson moved the yearly address from a daytime to a primetime hour, the first reaction was received. Guaranteed a significantly larger audience than originally anticipated, the Republicans grabbed the opportunity and started a new tradition.
Frequently, the response is presented by rising stars of the other party from outside of Washington.
Juan Ciscomani, a freshly elected member of the US House of Representatives from Arizona, also responded to President Biden’s State of the Union address, but he did it in Spanish.
The Spanish response, a sign of the increasing importance of Latino voters in the US electorate, has occurred intermittently since 2004.
Mr. Ciscomani, age 40, was born in Mexico and is the first foreign-born American from his state to be elected to Congress.
He is a member of the new Republican majority in the House, a change from Mr. Biden’s first State of the Union address last year, which was delivered when Washington was under complete Democratic rule.
