Barbara Young

Barbara Young, a 92-year-old actress who starred in Coronation Street and Last of the Summer Wine, has passed away. Her daughter, Liza Pulman, reported that she passed away following “remarkable care” at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Young, who also appeared in Family Affairs, Doctors, and Casualty, was described on Instagram by Ms. Pulman as “beautiful, brilliant, opinionated, loud, kind-hearted, and talented.”

The comedienne Dawn French replied,

“Love all around you, sweet L.”

Young, who was born on February 9, 1931, has played numerous roles in the ITV serial opera Coronation Street, including Barbara Platt, the mother of Martin Platt, who married Gail, and most recently Doreen Fenwick, Rita Sullivan’s friend.

In 2007, after assuming the identity of Doreen, she received a marriage proposal from Norris Cole and was told to prepare her bags by Rita before reconciling.

Ms. Pulman, a vocalist herself, stated, “Just to let everyone know, my beautiful, brilliant, opinionated, loud, warm-hearted, talented, and one-of-a-kind mother passed away on Thursday night at 10:30 p.m.

“My sister Cory and I were by her hospital bed for thirty consecutive hours, but as is so often the case, she passed away in our absence while a stunning nurse named Mercy (you couldn’t write it) attended to her.

“The care she received in her final days at Addenbrookes was remarkable – thoughtful, careful, and empathetic – and they all expressed how much they loved my mother, how she had made them laugh, and how she had always been interested in them.”

She continued,

“She was 43 years without my father, 30 years without a cigarette, and 20 years without a drink, but she was never without a humbug.”

“There are no adequate words to express how much I will mourn her. You did well mother. Safe travels.”

Young will also be remembered for her role as Sadie Hargreaves, subsequently Lloyd, in the Channel 5 soap opera Family Affairs, in which she played Pamela Tripp’s gossipy and flamboyant mother in over 100 episodes.

Michael Jibson responded to Ms. Pulman’s Instagram post announcing Young’s demise by saying,

“My deepest condolences.” While actor Tom Scurr stated, “It was a pleasure to work with Barbara many years ago,”

“She was completely happy,” he added.
