After getting an MBE, comedian Adam Hills claimed he became “addicted” to supporting disability sports. The host of Channel 4’s The Last Leg received an award for her contributions to disability awareness and Paralympic sport.
For a 2019 documentary, Hills, who uses a prosthetic foot, joined the Physical Disability Rugby League team of the Warrington Wolves.
He has expressed his love for the Cheshire club in the past, calling it “the heart of the town.”
Since The Last Leg debuted during the London 2012 Paralympics as a program covering the week’s main news while also highlighting topics about disability, Hills has co-hosted the program.
He fulfilled a childhood ambition of his by joining the Warrington Wolves’ Physical Disability Rugby League team when they traveled to his native nation and won, as seen in the 2019 Channel 4 documentary Adam Hills: Take His Legs.
He said the MBE was “like a reward for consuming chocolate. I’d be doing it regardless” at the Windsor Castle investiture event.
He stated that Wolves “is the heart of the town and the veins go throughout everything else” when referring to the Cheshire town and Wolves.
“What I love about Warrington is that the town feeds into the club and then the club feeds back into the town,” says the resident of Warrington, “whether it’s community outreach, dance classes, disability rugby, or dementia friendly eateries.”
“I feel like all I do is shine the limelight on the Paralympics once every four years,” Hills said following the ceremony.
“But I suppose also I’ve been pushing disability Rugby League, and through the Lord’s Taverners, disability cricket. I think most people who get into contact with disability sport end up becoming addicted to it, and I’m definitely one of those.”
The Australian further disclosed that Princess Royal told him at the ceremony that the BBC comedy series Would I Lie to You is her favorite.
Hills recalled his conversation with Anne as follows: “We discussed comedy for five minutes… I don’t believe I am violating royal protocol by stating that she cited Would I Lie to You as her favorite comedy show.
“Then asked whether I’d been on it, and I replied no, to which she expressed her disappointment.
I’ll inform Lee Mack that Princess Royal is watching him when I make the call.
