James Corden’s final “Carpool Karaoke” was the best imaginable. However, be warned: it’s extremely emotive. As the final episode of the Late Late host’s eight-year run on CBS approaches, his Grammy-winning best friend and frequent guest surprised him with an unplanned final installment of his cherished segment, shedding tears as they reflected on their lives, careers, and long-standing friendship.
Adele arrives uninvited at Corden’s home on Monday (April 24) and wakes him up with a loud cymbal crash in the early morning. Still half asleep, the singer told her friend, “I’ll drive you to work for the last week of shows!”
Once inside, the duo proceeded to sing along to some of Adele’s most popular songs, including “Rolling in the Deep” and “Love Is a Battlefield,” while James Corden rode shotgun. As they drove, the late-night host recalled how “everyone on planet Earth said no” when he first introduced the Carpool Karaoke segment on his program in 2015.
“Then all of a sudden, Mariah Carey said yes,” he recalled, later adding, “Stevie Wonder changed it a great deal, because when he did it, other artists were like, ‘Well, if Stevie Wonder’s done it, I’ll do it’.”
Adele’s “I Drink Wine” changed the atmosphere when it was played on their karaoke playlist. Nearly a year and a half after its release, the musician disclosed that the song was inspired in part by an emotional conversation she and Corden had while returning from a family vacation.
During the six-hour car journey, Corden confessed to her that he was feeling overwhelmed by “work stuff, the internet, and all of those things,” which later inspired the lyrics for “I Drink Wine.”
“It was everything I was feeling that day,” he exclaimed to Adele regarding the song.
“I was astounded by your ability to capture everything I was feeling about myself and life in a single verse.”
Adele reminisced through emotions, Corden shedding tears alongside her, that it was the first year that she felt she had to hold herself accountable for being an adult.
“The previous year, I deserted Simon [Konecki] and other similar individuals. But you, Jules, and the children were indispensable in my care.”
She told him upon their arrival at the CBS studios,
“You are my best friend in the world.” “I’m going to miss you so much.”
James Corden, who also recently had BLACKPINK and Diddy as two of his last-ever Carpool Karaoke guests, revealed in a farewell interview with Variety how much Adele’s surprise meant to him.
“The fact that she came to me and did that. It was her initiative to suggest, “Well, why don’t I drive him to work?” It is truly unique, he told the publication. “Because what you’re actually witnessing are two friends who moved to Los Angeles a week apart, I believe. And one of them will return home, while the other will remain. This is extremely emotive. It just so happens that one of them is the world’s most famous singer.”
