Yasiin Bey

Black Star’s Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli have reunited to release their second full-length album, No Fear of Time, 24 years after their first release. Madlib produced the new album, which will be released on the podcasting site Luminary on May 3. Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli’s podcast is produced in collaboration with comedian Dave Chapelle.

Talib Kweli said in a statement:

“Around three to four years ago, while visiting Yasiin in Europe, we began discussing ideas for an album, so I flew an engineer out to explore what that would entail.” I made it a point to keep the engineer on hand at all times when I realized this discussion was developing into its own creative dispute.”

He then continued:

“As we were in a hotel listening to Madlib songs, he said, “Play that Madlib tape again!” I am playing the rhythms while he begins to rap to them. In this manner did we perform the first song.”

Black Star released its debut album in 1998

The duo’s debut album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, was released in 1998. With the assistance of DJ and producer Hi-Tek, the duo postponed the release of their individual solo albums in order to collaborate on one of the most critically acclaimed albums in hip-hop history.

On September 29, 1998, the release of the album occurred. The title relates to the Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey-founded maritime enterprise Black Star Line. This album examines contemporary issues, philosophical concepts, and Brooklyn, New York City life.

When questioned about their album, the duo responded:

“The second album was created in a manner comparable to the first. For the first album, there were no mobile studios. We never visited a recording studio during the development of this CD. This has all occurred in hotel rooms and backstage during Dave Chappelle performances.”

In 2018, Yasiin Bey teased No Fear of Time Return

According to speculations, the duo’s forthcoming album No Fear of Time was teased in 2018 during a Madlib DJ set in Denver, Colorado. Throughout his performance, Yasiin Bey premiered new Madlib, Talib Kweli, and Yasiin Bey songs.

Bey declared:

“New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, and Yasiin will soon be available! All Madlib, constantly. Madlib, Black Star, 2018. Black Star, as performed by Madlib.”

More regarding their accomplishments

The Village Voice’s annual survey of American music critics, The Pazz & Jop, named the duo’s debut album as the second-fourth best of 1998. The Poll’s originator, Robert Christgau, reviewed Mos Def and Talib Kweli as follows:

“(They) build a hip hop dream in which hater gamers lose their girls-not-b*****s to MCs who are so disinterested in them that they immediately return them. The rhymes are the primary allure. You will return to the subcultQure that cares the most about these expressions.”

According to Colin Larkin of the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, the album is also said to have abandoned the hatred of Gangsta Rap and adopted an inquisitive examination of black culture.
