Ed Sheeran claims that after the deaths of his pals SBTV founder Jamal Edwards and cricketer Shane Warne in 2022, he “didn’t want to live anymore.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the celebrity revealed that he had struggled with depression “my entire life” and that he experienced a resurgence of the condition in 2018.
“You are drowning under the waves. You are sort of in this situation. And you cannot escape it.”
Given that he is a father of two children, he feared his ideas were “selfish.”
“Especially as a father, I feel incredibly ashamed,” the 32-year-old added.
Ed Sheeran stated that his wife, Cherry Seaborn, encouraged him to get assistance.
“No one truly discusses their emotions where I’m from,” he stated. Some believe it’s strange to see a therapist in England… I believe it is incredibly beneficial to be able to speak with someone and vent without feeling guilty.
Evidently, I have led a privileged existence. Hence, my pals would always look at me as if to say,
“Well, it’s not that bad.”
“Help is not a button that, when clicked, makes you instantly okay,” he concluded. It is something that will always exist and simply needs to be managed.
A coroner determined that Edwards, who gave Sheeran his first big break, died unexpectedly of a heart attack in February 2022 after using cocaine and drinking alcohol.
The tragedy, according to Sheeran, prompted him to stop a drug habit he had formed in his twenties.
“I remember being at a festival and thinking, ‘If all my friends are doing it, it can’t be that horrible,'” he recalled. “So it simply becomes a habit that you engage in once a week, then once a day, then, like, twice a day, and eventually, like, without alcohol. It just became negative energy.
“I would never, ever, ever again touch anything, as that is how Jamal died,” he concluded. It is extremely disrespectful to his memory to even approach.
Shortly after the passing of Edwards, Sheeran’s wife was diagnosed with a tumor that could not be removed until after the birth of their second daughter, Jupiter.
“You feel so powerless,” recalled Sheeran. There is nothing that can be done.
According to Rolling Stone, Seaborn ultimately brought the child to term and had a successful surgery in June 2022, the morning that Sheeran performed at Wembley Stadium.
A trailer for Sheeran’s forthcoming Disney+ documentary, The Sum Of It All, depicts the emotional toll of these events.
In one scene, the actor is depicted crying on stage as he struggles with Edwards’ death, Seaborn’s illness, and a protracted copyright trial.
Seaborn comments in the tape, “I’ve never seen him cry on stage.” He has not had the opportunity to process his ideas and find inner peace.
Ed Sheeran had already disclosed that his new album, Subtract, was rewritten against the “backdrop of pain and optimism” he encountered in the past year.
Initially planned to be a compilation of acoustic songs recorded over a decade, he ditched the project and began afresh, using music to “make sense” of his emotions.
He made the record alongside Aaron Dessner of The National, who previously co-produced Folklore and Everly with Taylor Swift.
Dessner told Rolling Stone that he had urged the artist to reveal a “vulnerable” and “elementary” aspect to his music.
As he had previously done with Swift, the artist began sending Sheeran instrumental tracks to complete.
“I had these instrumentals, and I would compose to them in the backseats of automobiles or airplanes or whatever,” Sheeran explained.
“And then it was completed. That concludes the record. Everything happened very, very quickly.”
The celebrity revealed that he made a second, wholly unique album with Dessner for which there is currently no release date.
In addition, he disclosed the existence of a joint album with reggaeton superstar J Balvin, as well as forthcoming tracks with Pharrell, Shakira, David Guetta, and Justin Bieber.
In fact, he told Rolling Stone that he plans to create five more albums employing a different category of symbols.
He intends to work intermittently on the last installment of this series for the rest of his life, “adding songs here and there. I just stipulate in my will that money be distributed after my death.”
