According to her management, the singer of “Killing Me Softly with His Song” is also having trouble speaking. Flack, 85, has been nominated for 14 Grammys and has won four of them.

Next Monday, a documentary chronicling her life will have its New York premiere. In January, she also intends to release a children’s book.

Along with Killing Me Softly, which Lauryn Hill later recorded, Flack is also well-known for the song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” which helped make her famous after it was used in the Clint Eastwood movie Play Misty for Me, and “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the cause of her illness, “has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak,” according to a statement from her management.

They added that she “plans to be engaged in her musical and creative interests,” adding that “but it will take a lot more than ALS to silence this icon.”

ALS, also known as motor neuron disease, has no known treatment (MND). It is brought on by the death of the nerves that transmit commands from the brain to the muscles of people. Their capacity to move, speak, and even breathe is impacted.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Flack’s 1973 release of her fourth studio album, “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” and the publication of her book and movie.

The singer expressed her desire for her songs to be remembered as “classics” rather than just an “old hit” to the Associated Press after suffering a stroke in 2016.

I could easily sing any number of the songs I’ve recorded over the years, but I’m going to choose the ones that make me feel something.

“Now that’s challenging. to consistently be affected by your tunes.”
