With an incredible eight decades of work in the business, Sir Michael Caine is a legendary British actor who has intimated recently that his next movie, The Great Escaper, maybe his last. This is not surprising considering the great actor is 90 years old and has over 160 film credits.
Sir Michael Caine talked about how happy and excited he was about his involvement in The Great Escaper in an interview with The Telegraph. He explained that he was drawn to the project by the exquisitely written script and his admiration for the character of Bernie.
Michael Caine thought his acting career might be gone because the COVID-19 outbreak had kept him off the big screen for three years. Nevertheless, he set out on this last journey and thoroughly enjoyed it.
“I simply adored Bernie’s persona. He really is amazing, in my opinion, and the writing is exquisite. I had not done a picture in three years due to Covid and other issues, so I assumed my artistic career was over. And I did it all of a sudden, and I had the best time ever,” he remarked.
Bernard Jordan is a British World War II veteran who, at the age of 89, made news by “breaking out” of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France.
His incredible story is told in The Great Escaper. The movie explores his experiences during the conflict and the remarkable period of his 2014 escape.
Sir Michael Caine admitted, in his own words,
“I can’t walk properly and all that because I am ninety years old.” I am currently semi-retired. Anyhow…”
Recall that two years ago, during an interview with Vanity Fair, Sir Michael Caine stated that the movie Best Sellers (2021) would be his last. He shocked us, though, by showing up in two additional movies, The Great Escaper and Medieval.
This illustrates how erratic a true artist’s enthusiasm can be. Whether or if he feels capable of taking on the assignment will determine how involved he is in future endeavors.
Sir Michael Caine may retire knowing that he has left a significant legacy in the entertainment world, even if The Great Escaper is the last film of his performing career.
