Alex was born on October 18, 1975, to his parents, Jose Manuel Cora and Iris Amaro, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He grew up alongside his brother, Joey Cora, ten years older than him, and his sisters, Lydia and Iris. Baseball was his all-time food when growing up; he found the sport to be breakfast, lunch, and dinner, says his childhood coach Kiko Cordero. His father, Jose, died of colon cancer when Alex was only thirteen. Jose was a coach in the minor leagues of Puerto Rico. He was the reason why Alex fell in love with baseball.

After his father died, Joey took all responsibility for home on his young shoulders. Not to mention, Joey is another baseball infielder who has played for four major clubs, including San Diego, Chicago White Sox, Seattle, and Cleveland. From now on, he’s working as a mentor for the Pirates.

He was already chosen for the 1993 Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins in the twelfth round but decided to play for the University of Miami. During his time in Miami, Alex was named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team in 1995 and 1996. While they lost the title of Louisiana State University, they regained the title in 1996.
Baseball America ranked him the best college defensive player to join the 1996 First-Year Player draft. After that, he was recruited by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round of the 1996 draft entry. Soon he was traded to play Vero Beach Dodgers, a minor league.

Alex worked mainly as a shortstop in the 2000 and 2001 seasons. He also played for the Dodgers as a second baseman. Alex played in 49 games for the 2005 season as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians.He joined the Red Sox squad on July 7, 2005, where he played 47 games. Alex led the team to win the World Series Trophy 2007.
He played 83 games for the 2007 season. Alex continued to play with the Bostons for the regular four seasons before he was signed as a free agent on October 30, 2008.
