Alex Hales Controversy: Failed Drug Test, Was He Suspened Or Not?

Alex Hales

In 2019, just before the World Cup, English cricketer Alex Hales faced controversy after a failed drug test, which resulted in a 21-day suspension.

Right-handed opening batsman Alex Hales, whose real name is Alexander Daniel Hales, plays for Nottinghamshire and the England cricket team.

The cricket player from England debuted in August 2014 in One Day Internationals (ODIs) against India and in December 2015 in Test matches against South Africa.

The 34-year-old is one of England’s players in the team that won today’s T20 World Cup semifinal match at Adelaide Oval against India. He was not out while amassing 86 runs.

Alex Hales controversy: 21-day suspension after failing a drug test

Despite his great talent, Alex Hales has not been without controversy. Alex was informed before the 2019 50-Over World Cup that he had been cut from the team due to a second recreational drug test failure.

In April 2019, he had a hair follicle test and tested positive for recreational drugs. Since it was his second infraction, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) banned him for 21 days.

In addition, he was cut from all other teams before the international season, including the England selection for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The right-hander withdrew from Nottinghamshire’s Royal London One Day Cup campaign due to “personal reasons” as things worsened.

In an interview with the Guardian, Alex described missing out on the World Cup team as his greatest fear and how agonizing it was. Witnessing the squad triumph without him was an even more agonizing experience.

The cricket player said, “Obviously, it was fantastic to see the team win the cup, but at the same time, it eats at you from the inside that you should have been part of it and you weren’t.”

Alex Was Associated With An Additional Scandal In the year 2017

Controversies are nothing new to Alex Hales. The Bristol Crown Court tried Alex and his England teammate Ben Stokes in September 2017 for fighting outside a Bristol nightclub.

On September 26, 2017, Alex and Ben got into a fight with Ryan Hale and Ryan Ali outside of the Mbargo nightclub. The incident happened at the County Ground in the city, hours after an ODI against the West Indies.

The two cricket players’ reputations suffered even though they were not prosecuted for any crimes.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also assessed fines of £17,500 and a six-match suspension on Alex. But just two matches were suspended and he was fined £10,000 since four of those games were suspended.

The English batter subsequently said that it opened his eyes to the extent of how quickly things can go out of control. He said that he had learned a lesson the hard way.

In addition, the cricket player eventually apologized for his involvement in a racist issue. It was related to a blackface outfit he donned for a New Year’s Eve party in 2009.

Was Alex Hales Put on Trial? How Did He Act When He Was Banned?

Alex Hales was not part of the national team, but he did not give up. He kept playing cricket for franchises all around the globe.

He played for the Rangpur Riders, Durban Heat, Sydney Thunder, Trent Rockets, Karachi Kings, and Barbados Tridents during that period.

Additionally, Alex was a key player as an opener for the Trent Rockets in 2022 and the Karachi Kings in 2020 as they both won titles.

He played for Sydney Thunder and was the Big Bash League’s highest scorer in the 2020–21 season.

Alex spent three years being ignored by England due to the slew of scandals. To make up for lost time, he has returned from his “extremely painful” exile.
