Alex North was born in Pennsylvania on December 4, 1910. American composer is best known for his soundtrack to 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” one of cinema’s first jazz-based scores. He also wrote “Unchained Melody,” which continued to keep his name alive throughout the generations. He composed the jazz score for the 1959 TV series “Nero Wolfe,” starring William Shatner as Archie Goodwin and Kurt Kasznar as Nero Wolfe. The show never aired. He was known for incorporating a streak of modernism into the traditional film-music leitmotif structure.

North was able to incorporate his modernism into a typical film music leitmotif structure that was rich in themes. One of these became the well-known song “Unchained Melody.” North is one of only two film composers to receive the Lifetime Achievement Academy Award, the other being Ennio Morricone. North has been nominated for fifteen Oscars but has been unsuccessful each time. Henry Brant, an avant-garde composer, was a frequent collaborator with North as an orchestrator. He won a Golden Globe for his score to The Shoes of the Fisherman in 1968. (1968).
