Alexander Fleming was born in Scotland on August 6, 1881. Scottish biologist, pharmacologist, and botanist who shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for helping to discover the antibiotic substance penicillin in 1928. His discovery marked the start of modes antibiotics, which changed the medical world forever. Linus Pauling also won a Nobel Prize for his prolific scientific work. He worked in shipping before going to medical school at the recommendation of his brother.

He discovered lysozyme from his nasal discharge in 1922 and, along with it, a bacterium named Micrococcus Lysodeikticus, later renamed Micrococcus luteus. His discovery of what was later called benzylpenicillin (or penicillin G) from the Penicillium Rubens mold in 1928 is described as “the single greatest victory ever achieved over an illness.”In 1945, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain for this discovery.

Fleming was knighted in 1944 for his scientific achievements. In 1999, he was named one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century in Time Magazine. In 2002, he was chosen in the BBC TV poll to determine the 100 Greatest Britons, and in 2009 he was also voted third “greatest Scot” in the STV opinion poll, behind Robert Burns and William Wallace alone.
