On May 30, 1943, Gale Sayers was born in Wichita, Kansas. Sayers, the second of Bernice and Roger’s three children, relocated to Speed, Kansas before settling in Omaha, Nebraska. In football and track and field for Omaha Central High School, he excelled, setting a state record in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 11 and a half inches.
Sayers went on to play football at the University of Kansas, where he was recognized twice as an All-American for his ability as a halfback and kick returner and was named to the team twice.
His 99-yard run against Nebraska as a junior set an NCAA Division I record, and his 96-yard kickoff return the following season helped Oklahoma pull off an upset victory.
