After graduating, Adrian began his racing career with the Fittipaldi Formula One team, working under Harvey Postlethwaite. He was also accepted into the March group. He gave the March GTP sports car a successful shape, and in 1984 he won the IMSA GTP championship two years in a row.

In 1984, Newey joined the March IndyCar team as both a designer and race builder for Bobby Rahal. Newey’s March 85C strategy helped Al Unser win the 1985 CART championship and Danny Sullivan win 1985 Indy 500. Newey joined Kraco in 1986 to work on Michael Andretti’s car, and his March 86C design won the CART championship and the Indianapolis 500 with Bobby Rahal.
