After graduating from college, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals and started his professional career in his home state of Maryland. He was picked at No. 38 overall in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut against the Oilers.

His efforts helped his side beat Houston by a score of 13-3. After three years, he guided the team back to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers. During his time with the Bengals, he was voted NFL Most Valuable Player in 1988 and made it to the Pro Bowl.
