Cheslie Kryst, The winner of the Miss USA 2019 beauty contest. After receiving two Daytime Emmy Award nominations for her work as a journalist for Extra, Kryst was regarded as a rising star in the journalism industry. Kryst sadly died in late January 2022 after leaping to her death from her Midtown Manhattan high-rise apartment building.
Cheslie’s death was deemed a suicide by the coroner, but police will still look into it as they do in all suicide cases. Since Cheslie left a suicide note leaving her mother, April Simpkins, the only beneficiary of her estate, the result is probably going to be the same.

Rodney A. Kryst, Cheslie’s father, cried as he characterized Cheslie as pure. Rodney Kryst and April Simpkins welcomed Cheslie Kryst into the world in Jackson, Michigan, on April 28, 1991. Before their divorce, Rodney and April welcomed four kids: Page, Cheslie, Asa, and Chandler.
After her parents’ divorce, Kryst still had a close relationship with them. She paid tribute to her Polish-American father with a YouTube video in the middle of 2020. Cheslie declared:
“Today is a unique day to honor all the fathers and father figures who have contributed to the quality of our lives. My father introduced me to sports. When we were little, he took my siblings and I to the racetrack every weekend, even though we didn’t want to go. He also narrated countless tales to us about his bodybuilding days.
Following Kryst’s passing, Rodney spoke with The New York Post and referred to her as “pure” because she didn’t drink or take drugs. When Kryst indicated that Cheslie’s suicide was prompted by family issues, he tried to contain his tears:
“She was as pure as they come; neither did she use any prescription medicines or substances. She never struggled with substance misuse of any type. It will be some time before we can discuss this issue further, but I believe it has a lot to do with familial dysfunction. She felt down.
Gary Simpkins, Cheslie’s grandfather, told the newspaper that her untimely death was tragic. He lamented that the last time he would see Cheslie was when he was gone. Cheslie was described by Gary as a happy and kind young woman.
She has compassion for others. Cheslie made an effort to assist others. Cheslie was one of the few people who truly cared about other people. She laughed, and it was contagious. It’s still resonating in my head. And I’m not sure. But I am confident that we will overcome this. But for now, this is heartbreaking.
April Simpkins, Kryst’s mother, was referred to as her best friend. Cheslie Kryst entered beauty pageants after her mother. In 2002, April Simpkins took home the title of Mrs. North Carolina.
Simpkins has over three decades of experience as a human resources consultant and is currently the CEO of Totalhr. She has won various awards for her accomplishments in HR. Cheslie told The Sun that Simpkins inspired her to pursue a degree in human resource management:
I look up to my mother. She is someone I always look up to and consult for advice. She has a remarkable reputation for being a state pageant champion. I looked up to her and wanted to emulate her, therefore I wanted to go the same way. The same was true of my choice to major in both marketing and human resource management. HR sounded like fun to me from my mother, so I went with that.
CBS’ Gayle King Following Cheslie’s passing, This Morning published a piece on Oprah Daily about her. She regarded Cheslie and April’s friendship as very close. King penned:
Cheslie’s mother told me, “Cheslie wasn’t just my daughter; she was my best friend,” when I met with her and her stepfather yesterday. Cheslie had stated the same thing to me several months earlier: “Her mother is her dearest friend.”
The grieving family of Cheslie has requested seclusion. In a letter to Extra, Cheslie’s family referred to her as an example for others. The message stated, “She shone, she loved, she cared.” The family of Kryst also asked for privacy as they grieved her passing:
“Cheslie epitomized love and gave back to the community, whether it was through her work as a social justice advocate lawyer, as Miss USA, or as a host on Extra. But more importantly, we know her influence will endure because she was our daughter, sister, friend, mentor, and coworker. The family requests privacy at this time as we mourn our loss.
