How did Duncan Bannatyne start his Professional Career?

Throughout his twenties, Bannatyne held a variety of professions. He went back to Clydebank, was certified as an agricultural vehicle fitter, and then traveled the country repairing tractors.

He also went surfing, had a good time, and met his first wife there. Bannatyne and his wife moved to Stockton-on-Tees in North East England when he was 29 years old because of the difficult economic climate in Jersey for foreigners.

He has acknowledged that he came from a poor background and didn’t open a bank account until he was 30.

Almost immediately after moving to Stockton-on-Tees with a £450 ice cream van, his commercial career got off to a good start. He expanded swiftly during the Glasgow Ice Cream Wars by acquiring more vans.

Bannatyne has expanded into the health club industry in addition to hotels and real estate with the development of the Bannatyne Health Club & Spa network. He paid Hilton Hotels £92 million in August 2006 to purchase 26 health clubs.

The Bannatyne Group is now the largest independent network of health clubs in the United Kingdom, with 71 sites. The firm has 46 spas as of June 2018 and ran 4 hotels, with plans to expand, including Belfast’s first health club in Northern Ireland.
