She completed her acting studies at the American Conservatory Theatre and Julliard the next year and made her stage debut the following year, first Off-Broadway and subsequently in major New York City theaters. During the same year, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in the film adaptation of “Ragtime.”

Her first film role was in 1982’s Beginners. She had a starring role in the 1984 mafia epic “Once Upon a Time in America.” In the same year, she also starred in “Racing with the Moon,” a coming-of-age drama, and “Lovesick,” a romantic comedy about a woman whose psychiatrist falls in love with her, endangering the psychiatrist’s career.

Both “Johnny Handsome” (1989) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (1989) had Elizabeth in leading roles. “She’s Having a Baby” was a romantic comedy in which she and Kevin Bacon co-starred. The suspenseful film The Bedroom Window featured Elizabeth as well.
