Jason Roy began his cricket career alongside age-matched English opener Rory Burns. In 2007, he joined the Surrey Under-19 tour to South Africa, where he led the team in scoring with a 51-run innings against Western Province Under-19s.

In the Second XI Championship in July 2007, he smashed 88 from 89 balls against a Hampshire attack that included South African Test match bowler Nantie Hayward, earning him selection to represent the South at the Under-17 level in the ECB Regional Festival in Loughborough.

Then, on June 27, 2008, he made his Twenty20 Cup debut for Surrey against Middlesex, followed by his List A debut against Yorkshire in the Natwest Pro40 League on July 20, 2008.

He was selected to play for the ECB Elite Player Development side in a triangular match against University Sport South Africa and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Universities in September 2008. In his first game, he batted at number four and scored one run against University Sport South Africa.

He went on to win the Easter Scholarship and spent the next winter at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide. In April 2009, he played for Surrey in a preseason game against the Leeds/Bradford University Centre of Cricketing Excellence, however, he was dismissed for a duck in Surrey’s first innings.

On July 6, 2009, Roy was selected to represent Surrey versus Warwickshire in the Under-19s County Championship at Whitgift School.
