How did Jayne Torvill start her Professional Career?
At the age of eight, Jayne Torvill began her ice skating career after taking a trip to the local rink after school. She won the British National Pairs Championship in 1971 at the age of 14 with her partner at the time, Michael Hutchinson.
After her split with Hutchinson, she continued to skate alone for a while before teaming up with Christopher Dean in 1975. The couple won their first international figure skating contest in St. Gervais in 1976.
In 1978, the team received their first 6.0 for artistry, and they later won the British national championship. Dean and Torvill left their careers as police officers and insurance clerks, respectively, after placing fifth in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, to skate together full-time.
1981 saw the couple win their first of four global championships as well as their first of four European championships. At the 1984 Winter Olympics free program in Sarajevo, Torvill and Dean performed to the music of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro, making history.
